MY TOWN MONDAY: DETROIT

Faye Dunaway is about two hundred feet away from me filming MASTER CLASS.
And you thought Detroit wasn't cool.

Michigan's film tax credits aren't only making dreams come true for Michiganders looking for jobs. It seems big Hollywood stars like Faye Dunaway, who won an Oscar for her leading performance in "Network" in 1977, are also seeing their wishes granted by cheap locations and a new and eager film industry.According to notstarring.com, Dunaway has been trying to put together a feature film adaptation of the Tony-winning play "Master Class" for the past five years, but could never get a production company behind it.The play, written by Terrence McNally, opened in 1995 and was about the opera legend Maria Callas teaching one of her master classes.Dunaway played the role of Callas during a 1997 tour of the play. Now, the newly-founded Raleigh Studios Detroit (formerly known as Motown Motion Pictures) is taking on Dunaway's pet project as one of their first major feature films.According to the Detroit Free Press, Dunaway will both star in and direct the film and has been in the Detroit area for about a month for pre-production.Raleigh is currently operating out of temporary offices in Birmingham, until work on the permanent complex in Pontiac is completed.Filming will start on Monday in Grand Circus Park.

Dunaway does have a rather tenous Detroit connection-she was married to J. Geils Band lead singer Peter Wolf. [I know, Geils is actually a Boston band but they considered Detroit their second home.]
Here in the Flint area a movie starring Fred Thompson & Brian Dennehey just wrapped. There may still be a little glitter shining through the decay of my hometown.

Apparently she's been trying to get this made for a long time.
If I had any energy, I'd walk over and watch.

Odd to think that there might be a rush to film in Michigan...to escape unions...though a film of MASTER CLASS with Dunaway seems like a natural, almost a guaranteed moneymaker on the arthouse circuit.

every depressed area wants to be the next Hollywood since we're not manufacturing anything anymore except entertainment (and bailouts).

And that is especially true here. Except maybe for FORD. Go, Ford. Just sell the Lions.

I'm happy for Michigan and I think this will be an interesting movie, but I hope someone tells Faye that she's had enough work done.

"Just sell the Lions."

Checking my change jar. Hmmm. Could buy the Detroit Lions or a Big Mac and a bottle of Ripple. The sodium burger and rotgut booze would be less detrimental to my overall health.

if you really want to get movie business the thing to do is have your own currency and make sure it' worth about sixty cents US - worked for us in Canada for years.

Detroit may have a currency all its own. Pay no taxes and we'll pay the salaries,

Deb's right. Faye has been through the plastic surgery factory. Fake cheekbones now and enough facelifts to make her look Mandarin.

Is this film still going on? I heard it's stalled and they don't want people to know. Would love the scoop!

They were here filming last week. Hiring extras even. So I guess so, I saw the play a few years ago and it seems like a credible production.

Ack! Just heard word from someone working on set that the production shut down as of 5:30P yesterday. Anyone know the scoop? I'm so sad. No one will say what is going on.

I wonder if the money ran out.
