"The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I’ve ever known"

Edie Falco, the great actress who played Carmella Soprano, gave this quote  to VANITY FAIR after hearing of James Gandolfini's death: "The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I’ve ever known"

Of course, we say things at a time like this without really thinking about it. But I would have to say that what Tony and Carmella shared did not strike me as great love. He cheated throughout the series; he was unable to share almost any part of his life with her, they were separated numerous times. In fact, I saw very little love between them. What I did see was two people who shared a house, two children, and grievances that would crush any marriage.

If you had to name a fictional couple who shared a great love, who would it be?

Friday Night Lights' Coach and Tami Taylor's is the single best marriage I have ever seen portrayed on TV.

Ariel and Eric from THE LITTLE MERMAID and Beauty and the Beast in the namesake film. I saw both these animated films again recently. THE BEAUTY AND THE BEAST along with THE JUNGLE BOOK and THE LION KING are three of the finest animated films I've seen.

I'd have to agrew with you, Patti. TOny & Carmella may have been in love at one time but by the time we met them there was little left but memories.

And yes, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS is a much, much better example. Even though Eric can get his back up at times more often than not he will come around to what Tami wants him to do. They were a real couple.

Call me old fashioned but I always thought that John and Olivia Walton had a great marriage. They didn't always see eye to eye but they never stopped loving each other.

That would have been my second choice. They also were realistically written. There were lots of good marriages on sitcoms: THE HUXTABLES, THE KEATONS, THE PETRIES,

In literature, I was always partial to the love of John Carter for Dejah Thoris. In film, the love of the Spartan King and his wife in 300, or the love for his wife that Maximus had in Gladiator, or the love of the Braveheart character for his wife.

Diane always loved the relationship between Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist in REMINGTON STEELE.

I loved that show. (At least for a few seasons) After a while, you could see the actors did not get along.

Like the show or not, the marriage of Dan & Roseanne Conners worked for most of the series.

Yes. And I did like it although Phil did not.

I'm sure Edie Falco was a bit distraught when she said that--although, since I've never seen the show, I really don't know how the marriage was portrayed.

I really like the marriage between Jean and Lionel (Judy Dench and Geoffrey Palmer) on the old Britcom "As Time Goes By." They portrayed a middle-aged couple both of whom had been married before. Their relationship had a very comfortable feeling to it.

How did they portray it? He was a brutal guy outside and sometimes inside the marriage, he cheated blatantly and lied about it unconvincingly. She seemed mostly to have made her peace with things as long as he wasn't too blatant about it and while she appeared to disapprove of his "business" dealings she clearly enjoyed the money it brought in and had no problem with conspicuous consumption. At least that's pretty much my take.

Did he care about her and their kids? Yes, but it didn't stop him doing whatever (or whoever) he wanted.

Lots of great loves in art and series, but none of them, just as in life, last, if only because of mortality.

"Everything comes to an end, Tony" - Carmella Soprano.

Bill and Hillary Clinton. Haha ;->

Nick and Nora. June and Ward. Tarzan and Jane. John Jacob Astor and his wife (she refused to get into a lifeboat and died with him on the Titanic).

Great ones although I think Nick and Nora probably drank themselves to death pretty quickly.
